FOOT AND ANKLE CONDITIONS

Foot Conditions

  • Achilles Tendon Rupture

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body and connects the calf muscle to the heel of the foot. The Achilles is responsible for push off of the ankle with activities. Achilles tendon ruptures typically occurs when a strong contracture of the muscle excessively loads the tendon - resulting in a tear. Most of these injuries occur during sports, and patients often describe the sensation as something struck the back of their leg. A “pop” is frequently felt when the tendon ruptures. Symptoms include swelling, weakness of the leg, palpable defect in the back of the leg and difficulty with walking.

Foot and ankle specialists confirm the diagnosis with history of injury and thorough physical examination. In some cases, additional imaging (such as MRI or XRs) are necessary to provide more information about the location of tear or integrity of the soft tissues.

If you think you may have an Achilles tendon rupture, please follow up with a specialized orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon for evaluation.
